Turmeric - Golden Paste

Turmeric containing Curcumin - Golden Paste at Chilternway Natural Health

Turmeric, an ancient spice from the ginger family, contains curcumin which is reported to have powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

It has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb to help with supporting digestion, heart health and pain control but it is now also being widely recognised in supporting cognitive health as well as fighting cancer.

Golden Paste was formulated to aid the absorption of curcumin and is

suitable for human and animal consumption.

Although Turmeric is a natural spice, taking Golden Paste may not be suitable for everyone and, as with most things today, there can be possible side effects in rare occasions.  To help with this we have added below a link to the website 'TurmericLife' - a dedicated site to Golden Paste where you can discover how Australian Vet Doug English became involved with using Turmeric and his on-going studies; see up-to-date information on the possible side effects for both humans and animals and what conditions are definitely not suited for taking Golden Paste.  Plus you can view testimonials, questions and answers from other users of Golden Paste and learn how the original  Golden Paste Recipe (seen at the bottom of this page) was founded to maximise the bioavailability of Turmeric/Curcumin.

Whilst not all general and veterinarian practices openly support the health benefits of using natural products, we still always recommend consulting medically qualified practitioners for advice on individual suitability before administering Turmeric Products.

Yes, the list of potential benefits does sound too good to be true but when one of our dogs was struggling to regain the full use of her foot (after severing two tendons and an artery out in the woods), it was recommended to try her on Turmeric Golden Paste.

We started making up the paste and adding one 1/4 tspn to her food twice a day and, wow, what a difference it made.  She very quickly regained the ability to place her foot comfortably on the ground and was soon running around again as if she had been given a new lease of life.

Suffering from chronic back pain, with no real relief without the use of strong pain killers, after seeing these results I questioned why I wasn't taking Golden Paste myself and from then on started introducing a daily dose.  I was again pleasantly surprised that in only a short time

I required far less pain killers to get through the day, my mobility improved and, since continuing with taking Golden Paste for a while, I now very rarely take pain killers if at all.

Whilst I can't say for definite that it is directly linked, since I have been taking Golden Paste, the full blown migraine attacks from which I have suffered with for decades have also reduced to 'zero'.  Now I am not about to return to trying to consume migraine trigger foods and drinks to test just how effective Golden Paste is (and anyone who has suffered with migraines will understand why not) but I should definitely be interested in knowing whether others have benefitted from the same positive effects given original reports shows Migraines to not be universally responsive to turmeric and can, with some people, make migraines worse...?

We are also extremely pleased to have been recently told of a veterinary report, for a friend's dog, showing a tumour noted to not only have stopped growing but actually to have reduced in size since being given Golden Paste.

The recommended shelf life for golden paste kept in the fridge once made is only a couple of weeks.

Personally we have found making up the paste into the coffee bean moulds and freezing them to be the better way for us.

Each bean is the equivalent to a 1/4 tsp (1.3g), so on average one batch makes up enough frozen beans to last us several months.

There is no exact set dosage of how much Golden Paste should be consumed due to the percentage of curcumin in turmeric varing dependent on source.  However, as it has been known for high dosages of curcumin to cause liver damage and so it is not recommended to take commercially produced tablets and capsules containing 95% curcumin for more than three months.

Our products are based on turmeric containing around 3-5% curcumin as this we have found to be effective and, for the majority, can be taken daily for a lifetime.

As it is reported that turmeric does not stay in the body past a few hours (again varies according to individuals and can remain for up to 6-8 hours), it is recommended to start with small amounts and slowly build up by taking small amounts throughout the day.

Start with:

1/8 teaspoon if under 40kg,  ¼ teaspoon if 40-100kg,  1/3 teaspoon if 100-200kg and  ½ teaspoon if over 200kg

Humans, Dogs and Cats: ¼ teaspoon 2-3 times per day up to a tablespoon per day for large dogs.

Horses: 1 teaspoon 2 times per day with maximum of 1-2 tablespoons at any one time

Build up slowly until you reach the desired effect

You can simply add Golden Paste into small amount of food or drink, i.e., natural yoghurt; a small bowl of cereal or in a glass of milk.

Or mix it up as a smoothie: Golden Paste, natural yoghurt, a splash of almond milk, banana, cinnamon, ginger and a touch of honey.

For your pets, simply add the paste to their feed.

Drink/supply plenty of water when taking/administering Golden Paste.

Do not leave Golden Paste exposed to air for long periods of time.  Only leave exposed just long enough to defrost if required.

Store sealed pouches in a dry cool area then keep refrigerated once opened for up to 2-3 weeks.  (You will know by smell and discolouration if the paste has gone off).

Avoid contact with hands to prevent transfer of yellow staining and administer over a non-staining surface.

It is advised to avoid administering any other supplements or medication within half hour to an hour of taking Golden Paste.

Piperine from the black pepper may affect the absorption of other substances in the stomach and so it is always advised to seek medical advice when considering taking Golden Paste alongside other medications.

An anti-platelet action may slow down the body’s blood clotting process so avoid taking before any planned surgery and always notify your General Practitioner and/or Veterinary Practice if taking/administering Golden Paste.

When making Golden Paste yourself you need to know the grade of turmeric powder (content of curcumin) and type of oil to use.

As we have found this varies considerably from one supplier to the next and some actually exceed a recommended amount curcumin, it was of great relief to us to be introduced to the UK's leading supplier of Turmeric who show a 5% curcumin level in their products and who supply everything you need.

Turmeric is oil soluble, so oil is needed to dissolve the turmeric in the stomach and allow the body to absorb the turmeric powder. The oil used must be Extra Virgin Olive oil or Cold Pressed/Raw/Unrefined Coconut Oil or Linseed-Flaxseed oil.

You can use Micronised Linseed, Coconut Oil or Olive Oil.  Coconut oil is mostly lauric acid which is a medium chain fatty acid and is not an omega oil but is non-inflammatory and has numerous health benefits in itself.  Linseed Oil, and better still, ground or micronised Linseed/Flax oil has a good Omega 3:6 ratio which is non-inflammatory.  Most other oils have an Omega 6:3 ratio which is too high and puts them in the inflammatory group.  Avoid processed vegetable oils as they will increase inflammation and be unhelpful in the long run.  If your oil is NOT cold pressed (virgin or extra virgin) then it will be inflammatory because of the chemicals and heat used to produce it - including Olive, Coconut and Linseed oils.

Turmeric Anecdotes and Clinical Effects, by Veterinarian Doug English, of Turmeric/Curcumin for both humans and animals - more information can be found within the linked 'Turmeric Users Group' files.

Turmeric from Curcum Longa - much of the effects are attributed to the component curcumin of which is about 3-6% in better varieties and best consumed cooked (rather than raw) with an oil such as coconut, olive or butter, plus with an important additional of black pepper.  The active ingredients are notoriously difficult to absorb and, even when achieved, they are quickly eliminated.  Ground black pepper has it's own positive effects, it is used to remarkedly slow excretion of active curcuminoids and prolong their effect in metabolic pathways.

Anticoagulant - allows blood to flow correctly and inhibits abnormal blood clot formation (if already on anticoagulants then clotting needs to be monitored when taking turmeric)

Arthritis - inhibits the breakdown of cartilage and has been shown in some studies to be as effective as hydrocortisone and phenylbutazone in relieving symptoms of such inflammation, swelling and stiff joints.

Blood Pressure - reduces and normalises blood pressure (if on blood pressure reducing medication then there is a need to monitor with your GP)

Cancer - defends the body against cancer via a number of actions: Detoxifies carcinogens, thereby preventing the initiati0n of cancer cells; Suppresses progression of cancerous cells by inhibiting their proliferation while simultaneously increasing their death and removal; Inhibits spread of cancer cells to other areas of the body; Reduction of side effects from chemotherapy treatment and enhance the action of some chemotherapy agents; Demonstrates either turmeric or curcumin curcuminoids to have beneficial results on preventing or treating a wide range of cancers.

Anti-viral and Virucidal effects -most successful in inhibiting viral activity when used at the beginning of infection or earlier as a preventative support.

Cardiovascular Effects - improves the liver's ability to clear the body of LDL (bad cholesterol) and increase the proportion of HDL (good cholesterol).  In addition, it prevents the oxidation of both LDL and HDL (oxidised cholesterol leads to blood vessel damage and plaque build-up which can result in heart attack or stroke).

Cognition and Brain Health - In addition to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant protection, turmeric/curcumin affects against neurodegenerative diseases and has been shown to inhibit formation of plaques between neurons (nerve cells) that disrupt disfunction.

Diabetes - along with cinnamon and ginger, turmeric is effective at reducing blood sugar levels plus increase insulin sensitivity and levels of serum glucose.  Enhances glucose up-take in skeletal muscle and other tissues.  Improves insulin resistance condition.  Need to monitor blood sugar levels and probably adjust any insulin medication being taken.

Depression - Mood lifting, mentally energising anecdotes are common.  Consult GP if on anti-depressants because there can be some additional effects and risk of serotonin syndrome if on high doses of both.

Energy - Increases metabolic rate and normalises blood glucose plus alertness.

Fibromyalgia - Some positive anecdotes - reducing pain.  Watch for drug interactions with prescribed medication.

Gastrointestinal Tract - Inhibits growth of Helicobacter pylori a bacterium associated with both gastric and duodenal ulcer formation and gastric/colon cancers.  Can enhance the healing of gastric ulcers via an increase in gastric wall mucus production.  Shown to have an antispasmodic effect on the gastro-intestinal tract.  Found to be protective against

Liver Health - Turmeric has a liver-protecting action.  It both prevent and repairs liver damage.  It protects the liver from inflammation and improves 'the clearing function of the liver when it has been damaged by toxins like alcohol by increasing the enzyme glutathione.

Fertility - Improves fertility in dogs, cattle, horses and humans.  Good anecdotes of sudden pregnancies with resultant health of babies with women on IVF programmes beginning to consume Turmeric Golden Paste.  Chicken egg production improved by 30%.  Increased size of healthy litters and increased milk production in all.  Several anecdotes of geriatric chickens returning to laying eggs after not doing so for years.  Increased lactation.

Skin, Nails and Hair Growth - significant reduction of itchiness in skin of humans, horses and dogs.  Significant improvements in Atopic allergy and Queensland Itch in horses.  Deepens coat colour in horses.  Counteracts sunburn even after redness appears.  Does this by antioxidant effect.

Teeth and Gums - significant increase in gum health and lessening of tartar in both humans and dogs and whitening of teeth.  Many anecdotes of improved and cured gingivitis and mouth infections.

Weight Loss - increase in metabolism, stabilising of blood glucose levels.  Increased energy and activity.  Contributes to significant weight loss because stored fat is used.

Wound Healing - Promotes rapid, healthy, healing of wounds.  Many anecdotes on old scars reducing in size and becoming far less evident.  Turmeric has demonstrated the ability to suppress cataract development.  Has a topical anti0fungal effect.

Seizures - anecdotally reduces seizures in epilepsy in both humans and dogs.

Turmeric can help as part of maintaining a healthy digestive tract and reduce inflammation to help prevent many other illnesses.

Ultimately, understanding how to maintain a healthy gut, sustain a balanced defence and strong immune system is

key to fighting disease and illness.

“If your doctor is happy for you to eat curries then turmeric golden paste ‘should’ be

– for the majority – acceptable as a beneficial natural supplement and safe to eat every day for a lifetime”

Alzheimer's Society - Unite Aginst Dementia

Turmeric has been shown to break down amyloid-beta plaques (a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease) in lab-based (in vitro) studies

Another chemical in turmeric that has been studied in the lab is turmerone. In animal studies tumerone has been shown to stimulate stem cells to make new brain cells, something that could in theory help with neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's disease.

Visit the link 'United Against Dementia' to stay in touch with on-going studies by the Alzheimer's Society and if you are considering trying Turmeric then use products such as Golden Paste - indicated to enhance bio-availability, helping with the absorption of turmeric/curcumin.
